Youtube, Pinterest, Facebook all have wonderful examples of concrete projects. Kent has always loved the look of wood and concrete so, during a break between jobs, he decided to design and build his own concrete table for the home.
REPURPOSING A POOL TABLE
Months earlier, Kent’s dad had spotted some workers hauling a large oversized pool table into some dumpsters. Noticing the nice solid wood legs and frame, he approached the workers to see if he could salvage the wood. They agreed and after several minutes of disassembly, he had 4 pool table legs and part of the frame all made of laminated cedar!
To give the concrete table a unique look, Kent used a tiger torch to burn the wood and create a gorgeous marble look. A nice oil stain was added to enhance the different colors in the wood. Next, he used the pool table frame to create the base that the concrete would sit on. Because of the weight of the concrete, heavy-duty bolts were used to fasten the base.
The concrete tabletop was the biggest job. It involved building a frame, pouring concrete, and then waiting over 3 weeks for the concrete to dry and cure. Initially, a hand grinder was used to smooth the tabletop, and then extra pressure was added in spots to showcase the imperfections. Finally, a sealant was used to ensure that food could be placed on the table without any issues.
A FINISHED PIECE IN THE HOME
Moving an almost 300-pound tabletop is not an easy task, especially when it involves carrying it down 7 stairs and THEN having to lift it up and into place on its base. But, the final result is wonderful!
